Introduction to the College of Food Science and Biology

College of Food Science and Biology, Hebei University of Science and Technology, was founded in 1980. Its predecessor was The Department of Light Industry Engineering, Hebei University of Light Chemical Technology. In 1996, it was renamed Department of Light Industrial Engineering, Hebei University of Science and Technology. In 1998, it was renamed Department of Biological Science and Engineering, Hebei University of Science and Technology. In 2001, it was renamed college of Biological Science and Engineering, Hebei University of Science and Technology. In 2020, it was renamed College of Food Science and Biology, Hebei University of Science and Technology. At present, the college has an undergraduate Experiment-Teaching center, a research center of fermentation engineering technology, and various scientific research laboratories, which covers an area of more than 5,000 square meters. Our laboratories are equipped with 1769 sets of various experimental equipment (pieces), among which 55 sets of large-scale equipment (pieces) are above 100,000 yuan, with a total value of 30.81 million yuan.

There are 103 faculty members in the college, including 83 full-time teachers. There are 48 professors and associate professors, 33 master supervisors, and 79.6% of teachers have Doctoral degree. Among the teachers, there are 1 expert who enjoys the special allowance of the State Council, 2 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, 1 provincial excellent expert, 2 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the provincial level, 1 excellent teacher at the provincial level, 6 experts with "333 Talent Project" and 2 teachers with "100 talents plan" of Hebei Province.

The college has three teaching departments: Food Science and Engineering, Bioengineering and Life Science. There are five undergraduate majors in Food Science and Engineering, Food Quality and Safety, Bioengineering, Bioscience and Biotechnology. Among them, Food Quality and Safety is a national characteristic specialty. The Food Quality and Safety and Food Science and Engineering was selected into the "Double Ten Thousand Plan" of Hebei Province. It has 3 authorized disciplines of first-level master's degree in Food Science and Engineering, Biological Engineering and Biology, and the authorized fields of master's degree in Biology and Medicine. Fermentation Engineering is a key discipline in Hebei Province. There are "Hebei research center of fermentation engineering technology" and "Hebei biological science and engineering experimental teaching center".

In recent years, the college has undertaken more than 60 national projects such as the National 863 Program, the National Major GM Project, the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Natural Science Foundation Program, and more than 120 provincial and ministerial projects such as the Hebei Science and Technology Support Program and the Hebei Natural Science Foundation. It has won 1 first prize, 8 second prize and 4 third prize of Provincial Science and Technology Progress. It has published more than 560 academic papers, including 148 papers published at SCI and EI. It has obtained 73 patents authorized by the state and published 39 monographs and books.

The college that centers on teaching, keeps on further teaching reform and actively promoting personalized education. In recent years, it has published more than 70 papers related on teaching reform and won 2 third prizes of provincial Excellent Teaching Achievement. Microbiology and Biochemistry are provincial quality courses. The college has established a complete practical teaching system and a stable Practical Teaching Base, which pays attention to the cultivation of students' practical operation ability and professional skills. Graduates are deeply welcomed by employers.
